We’ve also developed patented processes for recycling nylon 6,6 carpet fiber.”
Always striving to reduce the amount of new raw materials used to manufacture its products, Solutia has developed “Cradle to Cradle” goals that bring materials full circle in the manufacturing process. One of Solutia’s sustainable fiber options, Ultron® Renew, originated in the contract carpet fiber division, and is now available as Wear-Dated Renew. This product offers the superior performance for which Wear-Dated nylon 6,6 is known, while utilizing post-industrial (P.I.) fiber and polymer products created during the manufacturing process. It thereby removes those products from the waste stream.
Another option, Wear-Dated Renew Natural Nylon, uses a proprietary insert technology that binds fibers together so they cannot be untwisted, providing better resistance to matting with the classic texture, luster and look of natural wool. And because carpets made with Wear-Dated nylon 6,6 carpet fiber have superior appearance retention, resistance to crushing, pile height retention, and soil and stain resistance, these carpets are made to last, lessening their impact on the environment.
Solutia makes a variety of fiber products available to its mill partners. Although only finished carpet with a minimum of 25% Wear-Dated Renew Natural Nylon may carry the Wear-Dated Renew brand -- depending on the fiber used and how it’s combined with other fibers -- Wear-Dated Renew carpet may have a minimum of 50% recycled content.
Solutia not only works to make sure that its products are environmentally responsible, but strives to maintain a sustainable use of its land. At all its manufacturing sites worldwide, Solutia establishes Community Advisory Panels -- groups of local citizens who are invited to meet regularly with the local Solutia staff and are kept informed of our environmental report card.
Additionally, Solutia is a founding member and active participant in the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), a joint industry-government effort to increase the amount of recycling and reuse of post-consumer carpet and reduce the amount of waste carpet going into landfills. “One of the most important efforts we can make as members of the carpet industry is to facilitate the diversion of carpet from landfills,” says Cone. “Our participation in CARE is a significant element of our environmental strategy at Solutia.”
